For Potential Herb Growers
The Herb Growers Network is seeking more dedicated growers to satisfy the retail and wholesale outlets that have been established here in WA.
Growing herbs is certainly a lifestyle choice. Like all agricultural pursuits, it is one venture that takes time and given the herbs that you choose to grow, your investments can be long term or short term.
The Herbal Industry in Australia which supplies most of the products for Herbal Medicine is still going through the process of evolution and growth. At present over 70% of herbs utilized within Australia are imported from overseas, hence there is an immense opportunity to create an Herbal Cultivation Industry within this country.
The Australian Herbal Industry is very diverse and has the potential to produce a crop for commercial use, within all regions, climates and environments. It is a shift from traditional agriculture that has the potential to increase the economics and sustainability of other farming systems.
What can I grow? This is one question that I am asked most by potential growers. It is important to choose those varieties that you feel happy and comfortable growing. There are so many species and varieties of herbs to choose from. If you are already growing herbs, look at the varieties that are most suited to your environment.
The HGNWA has established itself to help guide you to growing the species of herbs most suited to your environment and lifestyle. It is all disheartening to plant a huge patch of herbs, only to find the parrots will eat them all, the soil is too acidic for the plants or the hot summer winds are too much for the plants to endure.
We here at the HGNWA have over 8 years of herb growing experience with a network of already establish commercial growers that you will be able to network with for help and advice.
The herbs that are sold through "The Herb Shop", which is our online outlet are dried herbs in 500g, 250g or 100g bags. In dealing with dried herbs this gives a longer shelf life for your produce. If drying your herbs is a daunting prospect, Bogbean Farm offers services to help you establish a drying area of your own, or to use their facilities.
Growing herbs does not have to be a costly venture; it can be one that can be started with the minimal equipment. As long as you have some basic hand tools, a passion for the garden and a little plot to grow herbs, the only thing stopping you will be yourself.
Organic herbs do produce a better income, though they may require more physical labour. The organic market is deemed to be a strong market for the future, if you grow organically, it might be advisable to consider becoming certified. We are able to help you with ALL aspects of your herb growing.
It is very important that the herbs that you grow are of the correct family, genus and most importantly species. You will spend a lot of money, time and energy growing herbs to sell, only to find they are not the correct plant. This is a major problem with herb growing and one that needs to be addressed initially.
The HGNWA has formed a membership of growers and for $35 a quarterly newsletter is offered, discounts for all services provided and access to website information is available. This enables you to be a part of the mailing list and help supply some obscure local demands such as blackberry leaves or silver birch branches.
